During the 18th century, the western part of the South Roskear Main Lode was worked by a number of small mines which had been abandoned around 1780. In 1853, two of these mines, Wheal Kitty and Wheal Weeth, were reworked under the name Gustavus Mine. In that year, it sold 89 tons of 7% copper ore and was abandoned soon after.
Wheal Kitty, located southwest of Wheal Chance and southeast of Park-an-Bowan Mine, had produced copper since the early 18th century. Wheal Weeth, also referred to as Weeth Mine, lay southwest of Wheal Kitty and south of Park-an-Bowan. It had been connected underground to Wheal Kitty at an early date and was reworked on several occasions, between 1760 and 1774, and again from 1815 to 1824. During the latter period, it sold 4,352 tons of copper ore worth £41,422 (Phillips and Darlington, 1857), while 18th century production figures are not recorded.
Adjoining Wheal Weeth to the southwest was Wheal Wellington (see separate entry). This mine was earlier worked in conjunction with Park-an-Bowan Mine, later formed part of the De Dunstanville Mines and was reworked independently in 1863. Though, it may also have been included in Gustavus Mine, since a plan of the South Roskear mines shows Wellington Shaft within Gustavus section (Dines, 1956).
The grid reference marks the approximate position of Weeth Engine Shaft.
