Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit in Lower to Middle Devonian submarine bimodal volcanic rocks. The primary ores are represented by massive syn-depositional pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, and were formed by submarine exhalation. Hydrothermal alteration consists of strong sericitization, chloritization, silicification, and carbonatization of the metavolcanic rocks beneath the massive orebodies.

The Ashele Cu-Zn deposit is the largest and most typical VMS-type deposit in the Chinese Altai Mountains, with about 1.08 Mt Cu, 0.43 Mt Zn, and 27.2 t Au resources. Average ore grade of 2.46 % Cu, 2.93 % Zn, 0.41 % Pb, 18.37 g/t Ag, and 0.36 g/t Au. The Ashele Formation (Early-Middle Devonian) and the Qiye Formation (Late Devonian) are widely exposed in the ore district. In addition, a variety of intrusive rocks are developed, including diorite, diorite porphyrite, and a few gabbro veins. There are about fifteen mineralized alteration zones in the ore district and the Ashele deposit is located in the largest No. 1 mineralization zone, which comprises 4 blind orebodies (No. 1 to No. 4). Among them, the No. 1 orebody is the major orebody and contributes more than 98 % of the identified Cu resource and 97.5 % of the Zn resource.

The Ashele and Qiye formations are exposed in the ore district. The Ashele Fm. is a set of Marine calc-alkaline spilite-quartz keratophyre bimodal volcanic rock Fm. interbedded with sedimentary clastic rocks and limestone, which are divided into two lithological members. The first member is dominated by tuff, the second member can be further divided into three parts, and the mineralization mainly occurs in the second member of the Ashele Fm. The Qiye Fm. is mainly composed of agglomerate, volcanic breccia, tuff, andesite, and siltstone, and can also be divided into two lithologic members. the metallogenic process of the deposit can be divided into four periods, including the exhalative–sedimentary period, regional metamorphic period, shear deformation period, and supergene period. The exhalative–sedimentary period is the main metallogenic period of the Ashele deposit, which occurs in the intermittent period of volcanic activity.

Cu: 1.08 Mt @ 2.46%; Zn: 0.43 Mt @ 0.41%; Au: 27.2 t @ 0.36 g/t
The Cu mineralization is primarily located between basalt and tuff units in the Ashele Group and is spatially associated with intersections of N–S and NE–SW trending faults. Seven ore bodies (I–VII) have been identified, subparallel to the host rocks. The orebody exhibits a two-layer structure: an upper stratiform, massive sulfide zone with very high sulfide contents (50%-80%) underlain by a veinlet–disseminated sulfide zone associated with silicic alteration with moderate sulfide content (∼20%).
