The Waikato River is the longest in New Zealand at 425 kilometres long. Its head waters are the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, flowing into Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. It exits the lake via Huka Falls, the river crossing the Waikato Plain emptying into the Tasman Sea south of Auckland.
The species listed may be referring to material produced by hot springs near Lake Rotokawa, while photographs of the Orakei Korako relate to a separate geothermal area also bordering the river. Both are north of Lake Taupo.
