Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Aqtogay Cu-Mo deposit; Aqtogai; Aktogai
Porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit with both copper oxide and sulphide ores.
The ore-bearing stockwork of the Aktogai deposit is elliptical and partially open tothe west, with a maximum diameter of 2500 m and a width of 50 to 830 m. A stock of granodiorite porphyry occurs in the center of the mineralized stockwork. Four types of hydrothermal alteration have been recognized, including I-alkaline (silica, K-feldspar, biotite), II-acid (silica, sericite, chlorite and carbonate), III-boron- aluminosilicate (tourmaline) and IV-late propylitic(carbonate, chlorite, zeolite, prehnite).
Commercial production began in 2015, and the mine is expected to operate for at least another 25 years. Geologically, this deposit is located in the western part of the Central Asian orogenic belt, an area characterized by intense magmatic activity. Approximately 70% of the mineralization is confined to the intrusive rocks, while the remaining 30% is found in the volcano-sedimentary rocks. In the area of the orebody, all rocks except the late mafic dykes have been altered.
Mineralization is spatially associated with the multiphase Koldar intrusive complex, which comprises gabbro and gabbro-diorite, diorite and quartz diorite, granodiorite, granite, and younger porphyritic intrusive phases. The ore-forming porphyritic intrusions occupy the central part of the magmatic–hydrothermal system and are spatially associated with hydrothermal breccias and quartz-vein and stockwork development.
