Abai Region (Abai oblysy) is an administrative region in eastern Kazakhstan, established in 2022 as part of a national administrative reform. It was created from the eastern part of the former East Kazakhstan Region. The region covers approximately 185,500 kmÂē and borders Russia (Altai Krai and Altai Republic) to the north, China (Xinjiang) to the east, and the Kazakh regions of Pavlodar, Karaganda, and Ulytau to the west and south-west. The administrative centre is Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk), a historically important city on the Irtysh River.
Historically, the territory of Abai Region lies within the eastern Kazakh steppe and upland zones, traditionally inhabited by nomadic Kazakh tribes. During the 18thâ19th centuries it was incorporated into the Russian Empire, later becoming part of the Kazakh SSR in the Soviet period. The city of Semey developed as a major administrative, cultural, and trading centre. The region is also historically associated with the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, where extensive nuclear testing took place during the Soviet era. Since 1991, the area has been part of independent Kazakhstan, with its separate regional status formalised in 2022 and named in honour of the Kazakh poet and philosopher Abai Qunanbaiuly.
Geographically, Abai Region includes a diverse range of landscapes, from steppe plains and river valleys to uplands and low mountain ranges. The Irtysh River is the dominant drainage feature, flowing north-westward through the region and supporting agriculture, settlements, and transport. Other rivers include the Shar and Uba. The climate is strongly continental, with cold winters, hot summers, and generally low precipitation, especially in the steppe areas.
Geologically, the region occupies part of the Kazakh Uplands (Saryarka) and the western margins of the AltaiâSayan orogenic system. Bedrock geology is complex and includes Precambrian and Palaeozoic crystalline, metamorphic, and volcanic rocks, intruded by granitic bodies and overlain locally by sedimentary basins. These rocks were shaped by multiple phases of Palaeozoic orogeny, resulting in strong deformation and widespread mineralisation. Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments occur mainly in intermontane and river basins.
Abai Region has a notable mineral and mining heritage, reflecting its position between the mineral-rich Altai region and the Kazakh Shield. The region hosts deposits of gold, copper, lead, zinc, and polymetallic ores, as well as coal in sedimentary basins. Rare and strategic metals occur locally, and construction materials such as limestone, sand, and clay are widely extracted. Mining and metallurgy have historically played an important role in the regional economy, particularly around Semey and adjacent districts.
Administratively, Abai Region is subdivided into districts (audandar) and cities of regional significance. Although newly established, the region has a strong historical and cultural identity, shaped by its literary heritage, strategic location, and complex geology. Its geological settingâlinking the Kazakh Uplands with the Altai orogenic beltâhas been fundamental to its mineral resources, settlement patterns, and long-term economic development in eastern Kazakhstan.
