Introduction:
Sauda Municipality is located in Rogaland County, western Norway, at the head of Saudafjorden, within the traditional district of Ryfylke.

Geology
The most widespread lithologies are gneiss and migmatitic gneiss, representing older crystalline basement rocks that have been strongly reworked and deformed during the Caledonian orogeny.

Intruding and locally interlayered with the gneissic units are extensive bodies of Caledonian intrusive rocks, mapped primarily as granite, granodiorite and tonalite. These form prominent plutonic bodies and sheets and constitute a major component of the bedrock geology of the municipality.

In addition to the gneissic and intrusive rocks, Sauda contains distinct belts of Caledonian supracrustal rocks, occurring as more restricted but geologically significant units. These consist mainly of metasedimentary phyllite and mica schist, locally associated with metabasite (amphibolite) representing metamorphosed mafic volcanic rocks. These supracrustal sequences are structurally intercalated within the gneissic terrain and are particularly well developed in areas such as Almannajuvet.

Mines and mineral localities:
Sauda Municipality has a documented history of zinc sulphide mining, most notably at Allmannajuvet (Birkeland mines). The mineralisation occurs as zinc‑rich sulphide lenses hosted by metasedimentary rocks associated with metabasite (amphibolite) within the Caledonian supracrustal sequences.

Mining activity was confined to the late 19th century and ceased at an early stage. Today, the site has been opened to the public as a mining museum. No significant mines or mineral localities are active in Sauda.
