Chinkuashih deposit; Jinguashi Mine; Kinkwaseki Mine; Kinkaseki Mine
Name(s) in local language(s):
台灣,新北市,瑞芳區,金瓜石
Notes: "Jinguashi" is the name of the mine as it transliterates in Pinyin, while "Chinkuashih" is its equivalent in the now obsolete Wade-Giles transliteration.
Kinkwaseki Mine (Kinkaseki Mine) is the old Japanese name for the Chinkuashih Mine.
The Jinguashi Mine is the largest gold mine in Taiwan and used to be the largest gold producer in Southeast Asia before WWII. The mine is located in the north of the country in Ruifang District. The mine has estimated reserves of 8 million oz of gold.
A classical acid-sulfate high-sulfidation gold-copper deposit. Native gold and enargite-luzonite-famatinite were the principal ores at this mine. The mine closed in the late 1970s, now a famous tourist area in Taiwan.
