Mina Santa Clara (Mina Macacona), Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

A gold property located 65 km W of San José in Macacona district, canton of Esparza, Puntarenas province.

Minera Macacona Ltda., a joint venture of United Hearne Resources (60%) & Canadian Barranca Corp. Ltd. (40%), began its evaluation of the Santa Clara deposit in 1975. The open pit gold mine was opened in February 1981 with a 500 tons/day ore feed capacity. Gold production through April 1988 totals 39,000 ounces. The mine closed in August 1989, after oxide reserves were exhausted. A 1988 reserve evaluation reports 2,925,000 tons of 0.053 opt gold in the Santa Clara mine area. Most of this reserve is unoxidized.

Santa Clara is a shallow epithermal vein and weak vein stockwork hosted by the Mio-Pliocene Aguacate Formation. Host rocks include basaltic andesite tuff breccias and flows. Ore is hosted by a steeply dipping fault and hanging-wall splits and is oxidized to a depth of 50 m or more. Free gold is associated with limonite and pyrolusite in a gangue of vuggy, crustiform banded, chalcedonic quartz-filled veins and fault breccias. Beneath the oxidized zone, gold is associated with pyrite and minor chalcopyrite and covellite.
