In the “Plombières-Vieille Montagne-Moresnet (Plombières-Altenberg-Moresnet) mining district” we distinguish two parts: "Plombières" and the "Vieille-Montagne-Moresnet concession".

"Moresnet" is the area around Kelmis (La Calamine) where Vieille-Montagne had a zinc-lead mine concession in the past, with the "Altenberg" as the most prominent. There was also a zinc smelting plant.

To the north of the VM concession is the lead-zinc concession at Plombières.
As in Kelmis, mining in Plombières has grown historically. Metal ore was discovered and mined during the Middle Ages.
In Plombières the emphasis was on lead, with zinc as a by-product.
In Kelmis, this was just the opposite, primarily zinc and lead as a by-product.

In Plombières there was a large smelter plant with lead and zinc furnaces in addition to the lead-zinc mine.

1870 The zinc furnaces in Plombières.

Plombières, Liège, Wallonia, Belgium

The lead was won by a blast furnace system (high-temperature melting) and zinc via reduction furnaces. The produced zinc ores were roasted in local shaft furnaces, and then the zinc ore was converted into zinc metal by reduction with coal by muffle furnaces. As a consequence, large amounts of "slag" have been left behind. Therefore, the creation of a separate locality for the "slag".
This smelter was under the management of the Spanish company Penaroya and was a direct competitor of Vieille-Montagne.

In the locality "Plombières" we also mention “Graaf” and “Moresnet”, these are two places where boreholes were carried out, but no mining took place. “Moresnet” in this case refers to the small village of Moresnet, not the "VM-Moresnet concession". Two different things…

In Sippenaken, however, there was mining, especially of zinc.

ⓘ Wurtzite var. Voltzite ?
Formula: (Zn,Fe,Mn) S [with O C H ]
Habit: botryoidal globules on quartz crystals
Colour: Yellowish brown
Description: Mélon et al. (1976): "In the collections of the University of Liège, a specimen originating from the Bleiberg and described by Buttgenbach (1921) carries the name of "voltzine". The mineral is in the form of small botryoidal globules covering quartz crystals. Light yellowish brown, these globules, with a density of 3.79, scratching fluorite, show a concentric texture with accumulation of small golden yellow scales in very weakly birefringent thin scales. They fall apart in the closed tube and are soluble with effervescence in hydrochloric acid. The X-ray study, recently done by Fransolet, reveals a diffuse powder diagram; the size of the rays does not permit precise measurements, but the distances found are close enough to those of the powder diagram of sphalerite. Voltzite: 3.08 2.64 1.91 1.61 1.34 1.23 Å Sphalerite: 3.12 2.70 1.91 1.63 1.35 1.24 Å The look of the diagram and the similarity with sphalerite recall the observations of Fournet (1833) and Frondel (1967) on voltzites from Sterling Hill (New Jersey) and from Roisiers (Puy-de-Dôme). These two authors have shown, on the other hand, that voltzite is just a mixture of sphalerite with an organometallic compound of zinc, resulting from the precipitation of a gel."
