The Longshoushan ore zone is 180 km long and up to 20 km wide, and coincides more or less with the NW-SE-trending Longshoushan fold belt at the southwestern margin of the Precambrian Alashan Block (Alxa Block). Uranium deposits in this area are either of intrusive type or vein type. The former are predominant in the western part of the zone, the latter in its eastern part.
The Precambrian strata in the Longshoushan area is composed of metamorphic basement and sedimentary cover. The metamorphic basement is the Longshoushan Group, which comprises amphibolites, granitic gneisses, marbles and schists, and have experienced strong deformation and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. The Longshoushan Group is divided into three formations: the lower Qilinggou Formation, the middle Baijiazuizi Formation and the upper Tamazigou Formation, with Paleoproterozoic formation ages. The metamorphic basement is unconformably overlain by the sedimentary cover, which includes the Mesoproterozoic Dunzigou Group and the Neoproterozoic Hanmushan Group.
