Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn) is a large island and principal area off the north-west coast of Wales, within the United Kingdom, separated from mainland Wales by the Menai Strait. It covers an area of approximately 720 km², making it the largest island in Wales and the seventh largest in Great Britain. The main town and administrative centre is Llangefni, while other important settlements include Holyhead (the largest town and major port), Beaumaris, and Amlwch. Anglesey has long been known as “Môn Mam Cymru” (“Anglesey, the Mother of Wales”) due to its fertile farmland.
Geographically, Anglesey is characterised by low relief, gently rolling farmland, rocky coastal headlands, sandy bays, and extensive intertidal zones. The coastline is varied and often rugged, with cliffs, sea stacks, and sheltered inlets. The island’s highest point, Holyhead Mountain (Mynydd Twr), reaches only 220 m, reflecting the generally subdued topography. The climate is maritime, with relatively low rainfall compared to upland Wales, contributing to the island’s agricultural importance.
Geologically, Anglesey is one of the most complex and significant regions in the UK despite its small size. Much of the island is underlain by Precambrian and early Palaeozoic rocks, forming part of the Monian Composite Terrane, a collage of metamorphic and sedimentary units assembled through ancient tectonic processes. These include schists, gneisses, quartzites, and mélange-like assemblages, interpreted as fragments of oceanic crust, island arcs, and sedimentary basins accreted during early Palaeozoic plate convergence. In the south-east, Ordovician and Silurian sedimentary rocks occur, while small areas of Carboniferous limestone are present locally. Quaternary glacial deposits mantle parts of the island, smoothing the landscape and contributing soils.
Anglesey has an important mineral and mining heritage, most notably associated with copper. The Parys Mountain (Mynydd Parys) district near Amlwch was one of the world’s largest copper producers in the late 18th century and played a major role in the early Industrial Revolution. The deposit consists of volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralisation hosted in Ordovician rocks and produced copper, along with lead, zinc, silver, and a wide range of secondary minerals. Parys Mountain is internationally famous among mineral collectors for its spectacular oxidation-zone minerals, including copper sulfates and carbonates. Smaller occurrences of lead, zinc, and iron are also known elsewhere on the island.
Historically, Anglesey has been settled since prehistoric times and was an important centre during the Iron Age, traditionally associated with Druids and early Celtic culture. It later came under Roman, medieval Welsh, and then English control. The copper boom of the 18th century brought rapid industrialisation to parts of the island, particularly around Amlwch, though mining declined in the 19th century.
Administratively, Anglesey is governed as the Isle of Anglesey County Council (Sir Ynys Môn). Its combination of ancient terrane geology, classic volcanogenic copper mineralisation, and well-preserved coastal landscapes makes Anglesey a key region for understanding early Palaeozoic tectonics, VMS ore formation, and the historical relationship between geology, industry, and settlement in Wales and the wider British Isles.
