The black shales associated with the Mn carbonate ore bodies are well laminated and are composed mainly of organic-rich black mudstone interbedded with argillaceous limestone. The mudstone laminae are enriched in organic matter and contain abundant pyrite, together with minor bioclastic carbonate. The argillaceous limestone layers commonly contain fossils such as foraminifera and sponge spicules, and exhibit well-developed horizontal lamination. Pyrite occurs predominantly as framboids and locally as subhedral grains.
The major Mn-bearing minerals in the Guichi Mn deposit are Mn carbonates. Scanning electron microscopy observations show that these Mn carbonates commonly occur as spheroidal grains or as aggregates of spheroids.
