Conwy is a county borough in north Wales, UK, extending from the Irish Sea coast inland to the high mountains of Snowdonia (Eryri). It includes a varied landscape of coastal plains, river valleys, upland moorland, and rugged mountain terrain, with the River Conwy forming a major geographic feature. The western part of the county contains some of the highest ground in Wales, while the eastern areas grade into lower hills and coastal lowlands.
Geologically, Conwy is dominated by Lower Palaeozoic rocks, principally Ordovician and Silurian slates, mudstones, and sandstones, which were folded and cleaved during the Caledonian orogeny. These rocks form the backbone of the Snowdonian massif and adjacent uplands. Igneous intrusions and volcanic rocks are locally present, particularly to the west. The county has a notable mineral and mining heritage, especially for slate, which was quarried extensively in the 19th century and played a major role in regional development. Minor metal mineralisation, including copper and lead, occurs locally, though on a much smaller scale than in parts of central Wales.
