Ordinary chondrite (L/LL6)
Fell, 21 June 1927; 640 g

An enormously bright bolide — perhaps Norway's brightest of the century — was followed by an explosion. A month later, 3 pieces were recovered from a 16 cm deep impact crater found south of the farm Barflo in Drevdalen very near to the predicted impact site. When the three pieces were reconfigured together, the reconstructed assemblage (~5cm x 6.5cm x 10cm) was partially covered with an intricate fusion crust. Olivine, orthopyroxene, troilite, and meteoritic iron are present. The abundance of meteoritic iron is somewhat scanty and the specific gravity (3.37 g/cc) is rather low for an ordinary chondrite. More detailed examination of the metal by Rubin reported somewhat inconsistent results in his usually successful attempts to classify ordinary chondrites by examining their olivine and kamacite compositions.

At the present time only 11 witnessed ordinary chondrite falls are listed as L/LL chondrites at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (Dec 2015). Only 4 of them are classified exactly as L/LL6 chondrites. Whether the L/LL chondrites are a simple artifact of overlapping compositional boundaries from two separate original parent bodies (OPB), derived from a third and entirely separate low-bulk iron OPB, or are reaccreted misfits does not appear to be a pressing issue within the meteoritical research community. However, this small body of classificational misfits within the 'ordinary' chondrites suggests that perhaps a few more surprises could be lurking within our collections.

Trysil is one of 7 witnessed ordinary chondrite falls to have been recovered in Norway. As with most Norwegian meteorites the main mass has been kept at the Mineralogical-Geology Museum in Oslo.
