Diogenite
Fell 30 Nov 1850, 4 kg

After detonations a very large stone was recovered, but only a small fraction was retained. Shalka was just the second witnessed fall of a diogenite. All 11 diogenite falls are pyroxenites (> 90 vol% orthopyroxenes) accompanied by small amounts of additional silicates and various opaques. Shalka's silicates include small amounts of exolved clinopyroxene, albitic plagioclase, and an unidentified silica phase. Opaques include chromite, ilmenite, troilite, and Ni-poor iron. Fluorapatite has also been observed.

Current research on diogenites is focused on the relationships between the pyroxenite-rich diogenites (the predominant diogenite subgroup), a few olivine-rich diogenites (all finds), and the surface of asteroid 4Vesta. Vesta is the apparent home of most HED (Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite) meteorites, but how the material of these meteorites were formed on their original homebody and was eventually transported to the planet Earth contains an entire set of open and only partially answered questions.
