West Bengal is a state in eastern India, covering approximately 88,750 km². It is bordered by Bangladesh to the east, Nepal and Bhutan to the north, the Indian states of Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha to the west and south-west, and the Bay of Bengal to the south. The state capital is Kolkata, one of India’s major metropolitan, cultural, and economic centres. West Bengal occupies a geographically and geologically diverse corridor between the Himalaya and the Indian Ocean.
Geographically, West Bengal is divided into several distinct regions. The Darjeeling Himalayan region in the north includes rugged mountain terrain and high elevations along the eastern Himalaya. South of this lies the Terai–Dooars belt, a low-lying foothill zone characterised by alluvial plains and dense forests. The central and western parts of the state include the Rarh Plateau fringe, with gently undulating terrain and lateritic soils. The eastern and southern portions form part of the Ganges–Brahmaputra delta, including extensive floodplains, tidal channels, and coastal lowlands. The southernmost part of the state includes the Indian portion of the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest. Major rivers include the Hooghly (Bhagirathi), Teesta, Damodar, Ajay, and Subarnarekha.
Geologically, West Bengal spans several major geological provinces. The northern Himalayan region exposes highly deformed metamorphic and igneous rocks associated with the Himalayan orogeny, including gneisses, schists, and granites. The Terai–Dooars and much of central West Bengal are underlain by Quaternary alluvial sediments derived from Himalayan erosion. Western districts overlie the eastern margin of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, composed of Precambrian crystalline rocks such as granites, gneisses, and greenstone belts, locally covered by laterites. The southern deltaic region is underlain by thick Holocene and Pleistocene deltaic sediments of the Bengal Basin, with no bedrock exposure.
West Bengal has a varied mineral and extractive heritage, though it is not among India’s most mineral-rich states. The western plateau fringe contains deposits of coal, particularly in the Raniganj Coalfield, one of India’s oldest and most important coal-producing regions. Associated industries have historically supported power generation and manufacturing. Other resources include china clay, fireclay, laterite, sand, and building stone. Small occurrences of iron ore, copper, and manganese are known in the western districts, though these are of limited economic importance. The state also relies heavily on alluvial sand and clay extraction for construction.
Historically, West Bengal has been a major centre of settlement, trade, and culture due to its fertile plains and access to the sea. The region was part of successive Indian empires and sultanates before becoming the core of British Bengal, with Kolkata serving as the capital of British India until 1911. The Partition of Bengal in 1947 divided the historic region, with West Bengal becoming part of India and East Bengal forming what is now Bangladesh. This political division has had lasting demographic, cultural, and economic impacts.
Administratively, West Bengal is divided into districts, with further subdivision into blocks and municipalities. Its wide range of geological settings—from Himalayan orogen to stable craton margin and active delta—makes West Bengal particularly important for understanding mountain–plain–delta systems, river sedimentation, and the interaction between geology, resources, and long-term human settlement in eastern South Asia.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Mesoproterozoic to Cretaceous : 1100 Ma to 110 ± 3 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
Fossils
There are 204 fossil localities from the PaleoBioDB database within this region. These data are provided on an experimental basis and are taken from external databases. Mindat.org has no control currently over the accuracy of these data.
