Ordinary chondrite (LL6; S3)
Fell, 22 December 1863; 1.7 kg
After detonations, several stones were found near the villages of Govindpur, Pandra, and Cossipore. Most of the mass (1.5 kg) was in the the largest fragment. While individual grains of olivine and orthopyroxene (along with relict chondrules) are present, much of the Manbhoom matrix consists of extremely fine grains of silicate (<.02 mm). A few moderate-sized Fe-Ni grains (≤ 1 mm) are visible, but most of the metal is disseminated as fine particles within the matrix. Total iron [~19 wt%] along with olivine [Fa31] and orthopyroxene ['hypersthene'] compositions are characteristic of the LL chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically, dominant olivine and prominent orthopyroxene are accompanied by minor albitic plagioclase ('oligoclase'), troilite, Fe-Ni metal, and chromite. Fe-Ni metal includes the unusual Co-rich wairauite. Very small amounts of ilmenite, phosphates, and other sulfides have also been reported. A cosmic ray exposure age of 15.8 Ma has been reported.
The main mass has been retained by the Indian Geological Survey [661 g] with a smaller mass [~300 g] held by the American Museum of Natural History (New York) [as of 2000].
