The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River is at the far south-west corner of Western Australia. It is 270 kilometres south of Perth, covers 2243 square kilometres, with a population of 13 168 (2013). Dairy, beef, viticulture and tourism drives the economy. About half of the shire is national parks or state forest.
Unlike much of Western Australia, the shire has a cool wet climate, with lush forests of eucalyptus trees, including the Karri tree, the largest gum tree in Australia. The shire incorporates the southern portion of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, and the lower portions of the Blackwood River valley.
Tourist attractions include several impressive caves, coastal scenery, surfing, the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, many wineries and art/craft galleries, high end restaurants and accommodation.
