The abandoned open pit is 9 kilometres west of Peak Hill, and 200 metres east of the Ashburton Downs-Meekatharra Road. It was discovered in 1991 by AFMECO Mining and Exploration Pty Ltd. The CSIRO convinced the exploration company to drill 708 holes over a 2.6 kilometre square area. This resulted in no less than three detailed reports on clay, sand and silt at the deposit, that could only get geologists excited.
The gold is hosted in metadolerite and metabasalt at the top of the Narracoota Formation, with minor gold found in the Ravelstone Formation. It is associated with sulphide poor, north-east trending, sub-vertical, hematite quartz veins, and carbonate filled breccia. Stockworks of quartz veins are found in a zone of high strain, close to contact with metasediments. The mineralisation has suffered albitization, sericitation, silicification, carbonate, and chlorite alteration. Gold and silver occurs as inclusions in pyrite, with associated pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, supergene copper sulphides and scheelite. There is a near surface supergene zone within saprolite, and gold is found in laterite in the overlying colluvium.
There was no surface expression of the gold deposit, as it was completely covered by colluvium-alluvium, and was located by drilling. The resource was 2.15 Mt @ 3.6 g/t.
