The town of Mertondale was 35 kilometres north-east of Leonora, where the Leonora-Nambi Road turns from heading north-east to north, if driving from Leonora. Nothing remains of the town today.
It was almost solely reliant on the Merton's Reward Mine for its survival. Fred Merton discovered gold here on the 04 March 1899 while looking for a lost horse. He developed the Merton's Reward Mine here which was active until 1908, and made Fred Merton a rich man. More information about Fred Merton can be found under the Merton's Reward Mindat locality.
In 1908, the town was described as: 'A run to Mertondale reveals a desolate town of empty shops, abandoned boarding houses, and unattended camps, rapidly drifting to rags and white ants.'
The goldfield also includes a couple of modern open pits a short distance north from Merton's Reward, a number of nearby gold prospects, and several outlying historic gold mines.
