Ordinary chondrite, veined (L6; S3)
Fell, 4 July 1917; 104.5 kg

After a bright bolide was seen, loud detonations were heard, and two stones fell about a km apart. The meteorite is rich in silicates (~90 vol%) with olivine and orthopyroxene most prominent. Significant pre-terrestrial shock has converted much of the plagioclase into maskelynite and created Neumann bands within the kamacite. Iron abundance (24.38% total iron) and olivine composition (Fa25) are characteristic of the L chondrite geochemical group. Opaques have been studied in detail, but except for troilite and Fe-Ni metal are quite minor in their overall volume.

Colby (Wisconsin) is one of 269 meteorite falls classified exactly as an L6 chondrite at The Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of early January 2016). The L chondrites (relatively low iron) are the most numerous group of ordinary chondrites and the L6 petrologic type is the most abundant petrologic type. The main mass has been kept at the Milwaukee Museum.

What's in a name? The proper and unique name for the meteorite is the Colby (Wisconsin) meteorite. The Colby (Kansas) meteorite is an H5 chondrite found in Kansas in 1940.
