Clark County is underlain by Cambrian sedimentary rocks, dominantly quartz sandstone, with complex Precambrian rocks exposed along deeper river drainages, particularly the Black River. The Precambrian rocks contain some of the oldest rocks in the state, dating from the Archean. These include gneisses and amphibolites severely deformed by the 1.8 billion year old Penokean Orogeny, a continent - continent collision. These are intruded by various pre- ,syn- and post-tectonic granitic rocks. The Precambrian rocks are frequently quarried for crushed stone. Some of the Cambrian quartz sandstone has potential as "frac sand". Some of the more fissile Cambrian sedimentary rocks are useful as flagstone. Glacial drift cover is relatively thin, but outwash gravel from Pleistocene meltwater can yield some interesting rocks from glacial drift such as copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
