The Plantagenet Shire is 360 kilometres south of Perth and 50 kilometres north of Albany. It is 4792 square kilometres forming an east-west band inland from the southern coast. It contains a population of 5182 (est. 2013), mainly in Mount Barker, with additional small hamlets at Rocky Gully, Narrikup, and Kendenup.

The economy is based on wheat, sheep, beef cattle, wines, canola, olives, and tree plantations. Located at the southern reaches of Western Australia, it has a cool moist climate. Most of the shire is farmland, with forest areas in the south-west, and two major national parks in the eastern section of the shire.

The 2600 hectare Porongorup National Park protects a mountain range by the same name. The peaks range to 670 metres high, of ancient rounded granite domes. The lower slopes are forested including karri trees. There are several walks, including the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock.

The north-east section of the shire contains the much larger Stirling Range National Park, an east-west series of rugged peaks over 1000 metres high. The national park contains rare heathland flora, with some species confined to individual mountain peaks. The peaks are the only place in Western Australia to receive regular snow during the winter months, although it often melts away after a couple of days.
