Ordinary chondrite, polymict brecciated (H5, br; S4; W0)
Fell, 16 June 1938; 2.23 kg
Accompanied by a dust cloud, the Pantar bolide led to the recovery of approximately 16 stones including one which was recovered from a rice paddy at a depth of ~1 m. In addition, there were numerous reports of very small particles falling on roofs in the moments following the main events. Fe-Ni grains are quite evident in hand specimens with some dark grey regions distinctly darker and more friable than other lighter grey regions. Chondrules are quite small (usually less than 1 mm in diameter) and small veins are also present. Compositionally, bulk iron contents (26.47 wt%Fe) and olivine (Fa18) are characteristic of the H-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of olivine and orthopyroxene with minor plagioclase, troilite, and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite, and other very minor opaques, including free copper, are found.
A relatively short cosmic ray exposure age of ~3.1 Ma has been recorded. The H (relatively high in total iron) chondrites are the second largest group of ordinary chondrites and represent ~40% of classified witnessed falls. The H5 petrologic type is the largest subgroup and account for ~50 % of the total. The main Pantar mass has been kept at the Center for Meteorite Studies in Tempe, Arizona [part of the Nininger legacy].
