The coal seams of the Mecsek Mountains are located in the eastern part of the range, extending approximately 20–30 km in a NE–SW direction and 10–15 km in a NW–SE direction, covering an area of around 350–400 km². The Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Mecsek Coal Formation was deposited on the Karolinavölgy Sandstone Formation, which predominantly consists of gravelly sandstone, fine-grained sandstone, siltstone, and rock flour. The coal-bearing formation comprises fluvial, delta-swamp, and coastal-swamp facies. The overlying strata include the Vasas Marl Formation, as well as Cretaceous basalt dikes and Miocene pyroclastic intrusions within the coal-bearing sequence. Iron ore deposits of swamp origin (e.g., spherosiderite, pelo-siderite) are also common.
Mining activity began at the end of the 18th century near Pécs-Vasas. The open-pit mine was opened in 1961. Production continued until 1967, then resumed in 1983 after a long hiatus, lasting until the end of 2004. The main reason for the cessation of mining was the Pannon Power Plant's shift to biomass and natural gas combustion. In 2015, coal mining for residential use was restarted at Pécs-Vasas.
Since 2004 several parts of the dumps are burning due to spontaneous combustion. Type locality of the ammoniomagnesiovoltaite and kollerite. Several rare ammonium-sulphates formed on the burning dumps.

Famous among palaeontologists for dinosaur (Komlosaurus carbonis) footprints.
