The Federation mine marks the western border of the Twenty Mile-Sandy Creek Goldfield, although there are gold mines all along the road from Nullagine out to Mosquito Creek. At Federation there is a couple of prospector shacks, battery or processing plant (appears in ruins but on the ground confirmation needed), and water filled pit bordering the south side of the road. A bulldozed area borders the north and south of the road, probably obliterating the old workings. A dam is 200 metres to the south.
Largely only names found. The first was in 1900, the mine operated by Finney and party. By 1902, John James O'Connor, and G. Giles owned the lease, and sold it to William Bell. B. Thatcher is noted at the mine in 1906. From 1909 to 1912 reports were found that John S. Potts was on the lease. With him is Strang 1909, and Asprey (surnames) 1910. In 1949, Tatham and party are crushing low grade stone. There may have been other prospectors over the years.
GML 91. Another source states GML 173L. The lease contained a quartz reef 10 inches thick, dipping north-west, or 60 degrees east in another source. The reef outcropped on the east face of a ridge, forming the highest summit of it, along a fault line. North-east to south-west trending reef. An open cut had been developed 10 feet deep, by 30 feet long, and could possibly be the water filled cavity seen next to Skull Springs Road, either expanded over the years, or one of the two smaller diggings next to the road. Ten feet of country rock next to the reef also carried gold.
