Gold was discovered in the area in 1886 by N.W. Cooke, and a town developed to service the nearby goldfields. By 1914, the town was at its zenith with a population of 3000. From the 1940's gold mining declined, and the population of the town today is around 200.
Manganese mines and prospects are to the east and south-east, while new iron ore mines are being developed to the south-west. Old copper mines and prospects are also found in the area, and rare species from the Otway nickel prospect.
Agate, carnelian and onyx is found on the Mount Edgar Station. In the region the Wyman Formation of the McPhee Greenstone Belt contains black hydrothermal chert veins, many carrying open vugs lined with banded chalcedony and agate. The Mount Roe Basalt contains amygdale rich areas of calcite, chalcedony, banded agate and chlorite. The Bamboo Creek Member of vesicular rhyodacite and dacitic lavas contain amygdales with carbonate, quartz, and banded chalcedony and agate. The upper parts of the Kylena Formation contain amygdales with quartz, carbonate and banded chalcedony. The Maddina Formation contains amygdales up to 30mm in diameter incorporating red-brown to red carnelian bearing agate.
The first diamonds in Western Australia were discovered in the Nullagine region, and over a number of decades several hundred small stones have come from alluvial gravels.
The town markets itself to fossickers, however public fossicking sites are lacking, and information about locations from locals is generally not forthcoming. There are limited services in the town. The area would suit independent, well prepared travellers, who can cope with the rough rocky and hilly, often remote terrain of the region.
