Named after the creek, its distance east of Nullagine. Gold deposits are found to the west and east of the north-south trending creek. Those west of the creek, and south-west to the Golden Eagle mine near the Nullagine River have been included under the Five Mile Creek heading. Nearby mines to the east of Five Mile Creek have been included under the Middle Creek heading, both based on historic information. The Five Mile Creek mines are varying distances south of the Skull Springs Road. Running parallel to the south of the road is the Middle Creek Shear Zone, with gold mines found between it and the road. Part of the goldfield is also known as the Five Mile Patch.

In September 2012, Millennium Minerals began gold production in the area, with a processing plant constructed at the west end at Golden Eagle, the largest deposit, and initial focus of mining. Several problems beset the project including lower grades than expected, metallurgical issues, and debt from the plant/mine construction. When this was written in 2016, many of those problems had been resolved. The company is developing shallow pits, on small deposits, it mines for less than a year before moving on to the next deposit.

The area is maze of messy shallow pits, much upturned ground, mullock heaps, and a myriad of tracks and roads. It also contains or once contained, hundreds of shafts dating from the late 1890's. While the present operations are a boom for the small town of Nullagine, once the miner leaves, all they will be left with is a mess. A more sustainable future for the town would have been using the old gold mines, to actively promote tourism.

The company describes its operations as the Nullagine Gold Project. We are sub-heading the gold mines under the historic names, like Blue Spec, Middle Creek, Mosquito Creek etc.
