Montenero is a hilly district of the municipality of Livorno, famous for the presence of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero, patron saint of Tuscany.
The inhabited area originally constituted an isolated hamlet from the city, while in the twenty-first century it is connected to the Ardenza district through an urbanized strip located along via di Montenero. However, the place maintains some characteristics typical of small countryside villages: for example, the neighbourhood has its own cemetery located on the lower part of the hill.
