Peanut Wood is a silicified petrified wood, being dark brown to black with lighter cream coloured areas. The wood is mainly a conifer and podocarp called Araucaria. Driftwood sank to the bottom of ancient shallow seas, where it was attacked by a bivalve called Teredo or shipworm. The wood settled into mud at the bottom of the ocean, and the numerous borings by the bivalve were filled with radiolarian sediments, creating the lighter areas.
The rock is scattered across the surface or near surface probably at several locations along the western edge of the Kennedy Ranges. It is part of the Windalia Radiolarite, of the Cretaceous period, 120 million years ago.
