The Shire of Carnarvon is 900 kilometres north of Perth, and includes the north-west coastline from Shark Bay to Coral Bay and inland to the western edge of the Kennedy Ranges. The shire covers 46 664 square kilometres. In comparison, Belgium covers 30 528 square kilometres. The only major town in the shire is Carnarvon itself with a population of 4559 (2011).
Carnarvon was founded in 1883 as a port. The major industries are wool from the inland pastoral stations, fishing (mainly prawns and scallops), tropical fruit and vegetables grown along the banks of the Gascoyne River on the outskirts of the town, salt mining from Lake Macleod 65 kilometres north of the town, and tourism.
The tropical fruit plantations give the town an oasis in the desert feel about it. Some are open to the public for tours, and tasting of products produced. Carnarvon also has a very good indigenous museum/arts centre. Travelling from the south, the overseas telecommunications dish can be seen long before the town is reached. The site was used for NASA's Gemini and Apollo space missions. North of the town are blowholes, the area looking like Mars. The shire also includes Coral Bay, which is a small settlement overrun by backpackers. Along the coast from here to Exmouth are coral reefs and lagoons which can be accessed from the beach or a short boat ride. The town of Exmouth is dusty and further from the reef, but has more facilities. The writer's experience is Australia has the best coral reefs in the world.
Mookaite and toredo wood specimens are widely sold internationally from specimen miner's leases on the western side of the Kennedy Ranges. These are not open to the public.
