Bonney Well is 24 kilometres north of Wauchope, and 90 kilometres south of Tennant Creek. It is a wayside rest area along the Stuart Highway.
Sometimes shown as Bonney Bore on maps.
The waterhole was used by John McDouall Stuart 1860-1862 during his expeditions across Australia. Alfred Giles, while droving twelve thousand sheep in 1879, found the waterhole dry, and dug a well, which was later deepened. In the 1930's the well was replaced with a bore and windmill. This can still be seen at the site, along with the stone foundations of the water tank. The site is named by Stuart, after Charles Bonney, Commissioner of Crown Lands of South Australia.
Eight kilometres south of Bonney Well, next to the highway is the Devil's Marbles, a collection of giant granite boulders, some perched precariously on other rocks. Called Karlu Karlu in the local language, which translates to 'round boulders'.
These are granite boulders which started out as molten rock which gradually eroded over the eons. Or, an ancient ancestor called Arrange was walking through the area making a string belt as he went. This is worn by aboriginal initiated men. As he was twirling the hair, clots would fall to the ground, turning into big red boulders.
The area is a sacred site, and no material should be removed, or rubbish left. A boulder which was taken for John Flynn's (founder of the Royal Flying Doctor service), grave in Alice Springs was returned in 1998.
