Kovac's Au prospect is 75 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, and about 3 kilometres east of the Stuart Highway. A gravel road connects the site to the highway. It contains a shallow exploration pit. A further older looking, and smaller shallow pit is 500 metres east of the highway, accessed by a separate little used track leaving just north of the main track from the highway.
Gold prospect, but modern exploration has found little gold outside of the pit. Drilled by Geopeko in 1969, with dis-appointing results. Costeaning was done by Billiton Australia in 1984 with much the same result.
Gold is found in stratabound pyritic chert, the lenses extending 50 metres long by 2.5 metres wide, averaging 6.03 g/t Au. On the north side of the chert is a pod of silicified pyritic siltstone, 5 metres thick showing in the open pit.
The mineralised lense is capped by a pod of silicified pyritic and tuffaceous yellow to grey siltstone, which thins and discontinues outside of the pit. Above the lense is a sequence of intermediate to acid volcanics, and tuff, containing some porphyritic quartz, minor 'ex' sulphide veining, and disseminated pyrite.
