The station is located in the far northern section of the Barkly Region Council, on the Barkly Tablelands. It is 215 kilometres east of Elliot, and 227 kilometres south of Borroloola. European discovery of the lagoon on Creswell Creek was made by Ernest Favenac in 1878. A store was erected in 1889, then a police station in 1895. Several sites are heritage listed including the Anthony Lagoon Davy Paxman steam engine, 1906 cattle dip, 1945 cattle dip, police trackers head quarters and goal. The area is known for 'Anthony Lagoon Ribbonstone', a brown, cream and yellow stone showing fine banding and swirls, commonly available for sale as slabbed material.
