Kaikoura is the northern most district in the Canterbury Region, with the Marlborough Region bordering it to the north, and west, the Hurunui District to the south, and Pacific Ocean to the east.
The district covers 2046.41 square kilometres, with a population of 3700, mainly in Kaikoura itself, the district's largest town. The district is mountainous with the Kaikoura Mountains reaching the coast in the area. Roads north and south of Kaikoura travel along oceanside cliffs, and through tunnels.
Most people travel to Kaikoura, as it is one of the best places to see marine mammals, and oceanic seabirds.
The area suffered a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2016, lifting the area up to 2 metres. Kaikoura suffered significant damage, two people were killed, with tourists and residents stranded when cliffs collapsed blocking the roads out of the town.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Cretaceous : 103 ± 11 Ma to 93 ± 10 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
