Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest ocean basin, occupying a major portion of the Earth’s surface between Asia and Australia to the west and the Americas to the east. It is underlain predominantly by oceanic crust and is bordered by extensive continental margins and island arcs, forming a central component of global plate tectonic systems.

Geologically, the Pacific Ocean is dominated by the Pacific Plate and a number of smaller oceanic plates, with widespread mid-ocean ridge systems, transform faults, deep-sea trenches, and oceanic island chains. Active subduction zones encircle much of the basin, forming the circum-Pacific “Ring of Fire”, while the ocean floor itself is characterised by abyssal plains, seamount chains, fracture zones, and large volcanic plateaus. The oceanic crust is generally younger than continental crust and records a long history of seafloor spreading and plate motion.

From a mineralogical and geological perspective, the Pacific Ocean is significant for several types of seafloor mineralisation. Hydrothermal systems associated with mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins host polymetallic sulphide deposits formed at deep-sea vents, where mineral assemblages precipitate directly from hydrothermal fluids. In addition, extensive areas of the Pacific abyssal plains host polymetallic manganese nodules and crusts, enriched in manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, and copper, formed by slow chemical precipitation and diagenetic processes on the seafloor.
