The Handsworth was part of the original gold discovery at Bald Spur by Alex Peebles and W. Empar, however it was relinquished to abide by a wardens decision over how much land they were allowed to control.
For much of its history the mine was owned by Louis Woodcock and J.S. Wilson. Its early history was not found, although it is noted in 1895 the site has not been developed.
Some ore is taken to the Moanataiari battery at Thames in 1897. The mine was particularly active by Woodcock and Wilson from 1900 to 1907. In 1904, the mine is amalgamated with the Handsworth Extended lease.
Around 1908 the mine is known as the Handsworth United and appears to be under a company or syndicate ownership. It covers the old Handsworth, Irene, Lady Carrington, and Otama leases. Prosaic mine reports are generated regularly between 1909 to 1915. A 1913 proposal to amalgamate with the Waitaia Mine is rejected by the Handsworth United shareholders. This operation continues to 1915, when protection is sought, and the mine closed the following year.
The mine is on Bald Spur, 2 kilometres south of Kuaotunu. The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate.
