The Joutsijärvi area is a 578 ha area located in the eastern part of the Central Lapland Granitoid complex, about 25km east from Kemijärvi.
The area, which is a strongly granitised schist belt, was previously GTK’s exploration target for base metals and gold. 22 shallow diamond drill holes (totalling 656m) and six deep diamond drill holes (totalling 625m) were drilled in magnetic and electromagnetic anomalies caused by iron sulphides and flaky graphite. Flaky graphite was noted and beneficiation tests were made from selected samples. The preliminary tests showed that the quality of graphite is good.
Recent studies by GTK shows that graphite occurs as parallel orientation of flakes within the graphite-sulphide-schists. The graphite is characterised by coarse flakes, with high purity and crystallinity, which are required for applications in advanced technologies.
