Mina da Amieira, Castelo, Sesimbra, Distrito de Setúbal, Portugal
Diatomite mine (closed 1984) explored by Sociedade Industrial de Alfarim, Lda.
Mining concession no. 2015.
Several occurrences of diatomite are found in the region of Sesimbra, some of which were exploited by mining industries; the largest of these mines is located near Amieira. Although abandoned since 1984, the Amieira diatomite mine presents many interesting characteristics that grant it a high value as a geological-mining heritage site that should be preserved.
Ref.: P. S. Caetano & P. Rodrigues (2006) Exploração de diatomito em Amieira (Sesimbra): um interessante exemplo de património geológico-mineiro (The diatomite mine at Amieira (Sesimbra): an interesting example of geological-mining heritage) - VII Congresso Nacional de Geologia, Évora.
This old diatomite mining operation consists of the mineral deposit and its respective processing unit. The diatomite deposit, dating back to the Plio-Pleistocene epoch (approximately 2 million years), is a small-scale layered deposit with interspersed sandy beds. The exploited deposit does not exceed a thickness of 3 meters and represents the only diatomite mining concession in the Setúbal Peninsula that was actively worked until 1984.
