Located near the town of Kanona. This locality, a gahnite-bearing manganiferous schist was discovered in 1967 by the geologist of the Geological Survey Department, Lusaka, R.J. Cordiner. A "viridine" with a very high manganese content was recognized by Vrána in 1972 in material sampled from this locality. This material was further studied and later recognized and described as a new mineral species, named Kanonaite (Vrána et al. 1978).
The kanonaite-bearing gahnite-schist is a 20 cm thick band embedded in mica schist.
