The Gariep Supergroup basement has been weathered to residual clay at this site on the “0 to -2 m terrace”. This weathering probably took place after deposition of the regressive lower shoreface gravel and overlying upper shoreface/beach sands, which would have formed an armoured surface during the subsequent marine transgression.
The terrace gravels contain pebbles to boulders of sandstone, chert, gneiss, jasper and banded ironstone, is shelly in places and commonly have calcareous or ferruginous cement. The gravels generally represent regressive lower shoreface deposits and are commonly overlain by upper shoreface, beach and, in places, dune sands (Cole, 2013).
