The heavy-mineral bearing beach sand extends to a depth of 3 m and overlies
gravel at least 0.3 m thick, which is diamondiferous locally and was formerly mined behind a coffer dam at a site 1 km further south. In addition
to the beach sand, isolated bands of heavy-mineral bearing aeolian dune sand are present on the backshore in front of a 30 m high cliff.
The beach sand yielded 12% ilmenite, but there was no data for the other heavy minerals. The cliff is capped by the “27 m wave-cut terrace”, which is overlain by gravel and heavy mineral-bearing sand and was probably the source of the
heavy minerals on the present beach (Cole,2013).
