Terlingua District
A mining district mostly within southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the Texas villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican village of Santa Elena. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people.
The mineralization formed at ~45 bar and ~200°C. The aqueous ore-forming fluid had a pH of ~5 to 7 and was H₂S-saturated. Cinnabar was deposited as a result of H₂S oxidation through mixing and cooling with local meteoric water. The mercury oxychlorides are restricted to limestone-clay contact deposits.
The most productive mercury mines are in a zone of southward-dipping fractures and faults near the Terlingua monocline and Long Draw graben. The cinnabar deposits are not on the monocline itself but are updip from it. The host structures of the ore deposits, the cave-fill zones and breccia pipes, were formed after volcanism and before igneous intrusion.
The Terlingua mining district is in a province of alkalic igneous rocks where the sedimentary strata are intruded by many sills, laccoliths, dikes, and plugs that range in composition from rhyolite through analcime syenite to olivine basalt. The intrusive rocks can be broadly classified into those that contain analcime and those that are analcime-free. The analcime-free rocks are rhyolite, quartz soda syenite, soda trachyte, soda latite, and olivine basalt. Most of the igneous units were deposited about 37 to 31 Ma.
Hematite is notably common in an altered, cinnabar-bearing assemblage called “jaboncillo,” a banded assemblage of fine-grained cinnabar and hexagonal crystals of hematite and kaolinite and quartz replacing original smectite clay minerals in the basal beds of the Del Rio shale formation.
