The Witvlakte deposit is a size 2 dormant deposit that contains sepiolite, gypsum, kieselguhr, dolomite and lignite. The size 2 (10kt to 100kt) relates to the sepiolite, for which an inferred resource of 100 kt has been calculated.
The deposit lies below a pan over an areal extent of about 3 km² with the dolomite forming a dolcrete on the pan floor. This grades down into very light-grey clay containing sepiolite, kieselguhr and gypsum. Lignite was intersected in a borehole at a depth of 49 m and is separated from the
other commodities by 37 m of aeolian and fluvial sand and 4 m of lacustrine clay.
The lignite and lacustrine clay are Middle Miocene in age, whereas the overlying sand, which has been assigned to the informal “Koekenaap Formation”, is probably Pleistocene in age (Cole, 2013).
