Mineral Occurrence Area (Active) - last checked 2025
Köppen climate type:
Kaolinised pegmatites and quartz-veins exploited for cassiterite and columbite-tantalite and explored for lithium. Fresh spodumene pegmatites occur at depth in drill cores (Piran Resources Rwanda Ltd, drilling campaign 2018, Trinity Metals drilling campaign 2024).
At Musha-Ntunga, exploration and exploitation started in the late 1920s. Until the mid-1980s, the area produced mixed columbite-tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from outcrops and shallow (<20 m) tunnel systems. Several intersections of more than 50 m with Li2O contents of 1 to 2 wt % were measured, thus leading to the discovery of a lithium prospect. Current mining activities are solely underground, and the tunnel system now reaches depths of 50 m.
