The Rock Island Dam was constructed across the Columbia River in 1929-1933. During deepening of the Columbia River channel in the 1950s, vesicular basalt cobbles and boulders, containing zeolites, were dredged from the river and placed on the northeastern bank of the Columbia River at Rock Island Dam, in Douglas County.

In the late 1950s, zeolite and pyrite specimens found along the dike were sent to Kamb and Oke for identification. The new zeolite paulingite was described in 1960 from this rock. A search of the rock in the cliffs and the river upstream from the dam has not revealed any zeolites.

Additional basalt, containing empty vesicles or opal, was quarried from the cliffs and placed on the river dike covering the zeolite-bearing basalt that had been dredged from the river.

In the late 1970s, a second powerhouse was built on the west side of the dam. The river was blocked off and core drilling of the horizontal rock flows was made. Vesicles that were found were either empty or contained calcite, opal, or iron oxide (Lyman, 1977). No zeolites were found.

Zeolites can still be found low on the eastern dike right near the water although their source is unknown.
