The Rocchette Pannocchieschi castle is located 6 km north of Massa Marittima. The castle, built during the 11th and 12th centuries, exploited chalcopyrite, silver-bearing galena and tetrahedrite ore. No evident mineralisation may be
found at the site today.

Two different slag heaps have been identified at Rocchette Pannocchieschi. The slags are apparently not abundant, as only a few tons of slags occur at the site. The Rocchette Pannocchiesi slags are dark grey, tapped slags. They occur as hand-sized fragments most probably resulting from deliberate fragmentation which aimed to recover the metal that escaped segregation in the furnace. These slags contain large amounts of dendritic iron oxides (wüstite and magnetite). Kirschsteinite occurs as acicular crystals intermixed within a very porous glassy matrix. Rocchette Pannocchieschi slags
mens, like those of Arialla, contain metallic grains and Cu–Sb or Fe–As metal alloys along with a few chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite prills.
