Was discovered in 1991.
The ME Knoll has a pumiceous body and crops out with a relative height of 600 m from the flat trough-filling seafloor sediment at a depth of 1200 m. There are four small basins at the top of the ME Knoll, but the hydrothermal vents are restricted to the southernmost “C basin”. In this basin, eight hydrothermal vents were discovered by Shinkai 2000 submersible in the early 1990s, which are generally aligned in an N-S orientation. The maximum fluid temperature detected in this field was 278 °C, corresponding to the boiling temperature at the seafloor depth.
