The Brejuí W-Mo skarn deposit contains the largest Brazilian scheelite ore reserves in operation (25.4 million metric tonnes [Mt] at 0.04–2.4% WO3). It is included in the Seridó tungsten province, which corresponds to approximately 60% of Brazilian reserves. The Seridó tungsten province is an eastern segment of the Seridó mobile belt in the Borborema province (NE Brazil). Skarn systems found in Seridó tungsten province generated complex ore deposits in terms of structural control, orebody geometry, and hydrothermal alteration.
The Brejuí W-Mo skarn deposit is hosted by metasedimentary rocks of the Jucurutu Formation (Seridó Group), close to the Acari Brasiliano pluton. The skarns of the Brejuí deposit are developed on marbles of the Jucurutu Formation, close to the lithologic contact with gneisses from the same formation, producing calc-silicate rock layers. They are formed by overprinting of prograde and retrograde mineral assemblages. The prograde mineral assemblage resulted in banded rocks with massive coarse-grained textures composed of diopside-hedenbergite– and grossular-rich layers. The retrograde mineral assemblage was formed in successive stages of hydrothermal alteration developed on the prograde skarns. There are three main hydrothermal stages: (1) scapolite-vesuvianite formed at temperatures from 380° to 450°C and fluid pressure of 2 kbar, (2) epidote-prehnite developed at temperatures from 270° to 380°C and fluid pressure of 2 kbar, and (3) zeolite (main ore zone) developed at temperatures from 200° to 300°C and fluid pressure of 0.6 to 1 kbar. The scapolite-vesuvianite stage resulted from high-temperature metasomatism caused by the circulation of the magmatic-hydrothermal fluids in the skarn system. The epidote-prehnite and zeolite stages mark the fluid mixing process.
