The Silvermines District extends west from the Silvermines village for a distance of some 5km to Shallee Cross and includes all the northern side of the Shallee Mountains

Carbonate-hosted stratabound and vein Pb-Zn deposits.
Arguably Ireland's most famous mineral locality, certainly its most prolific.

The mining district has a long history of outstanding mineral specimens, unfortunately very little of this material was actually preserved. It was only in the late 1970s that the efforts of the late Richard Barstow caused the area to gain international recognition. Countless museum quality specimens of mirror lustre galena and honey blende were saved by Barstow by purchasing material from the miners.

Nowadays, finding worthwhile specimens is virtually impossible with all of fabulous galena and sphalerite for which the district is famous, long gone.

ⓘ Argentotennantite-(Zn)
Formula: Ag6(Cu4Zn2)As4S12S

Habit: Chisel Shaped
Colour: Translucent, White
Description: Barite in massive form is particularly abundant-it being the primary ore mined although well formed crystals are incredibly rare and exceptionnally difficult to find making the single known specimen quite important. A cabinet specimen showing well formed chisel-shaped crystals and minor pyrite cubes (well oxidised, leaving little more than limonite and iron staining). Cockcomb barite has also been reported from the site.
